Medlar - Mespilus germanica

The subtle russet hues of the Medlar epitomize the colours of Autumn. The round single fruits ripen in shades of pale golden brown to deep chestnut. In Spring the tree bears pretty white blossom, and later the large leathery leaves are ablaze with bright colour. The Medlar originates in Persia, and was cultivated by the ancient Greeks and Romans, and now grows in various parts of Europe, Britain and North America. The fruit is used when over ripe, or bletted, mainly for jellies and compotes.
