Almond - Prunus dulcis

Originally from the Middle East, Almonds are closely related to Peaches, the fruits having a similar appearance. However, the outer velvety layer of the Almond splits open to reveal a hard shell that contains the single edible seed, and does not swell like a Peach. The delicate light pink blossom flowers early, followed by long pointed leaves - an Almond orchard in full flower is an unforgettable sight.
